Brussel Sprouts Health Benefits

Brussel Sprouts are miniature versions of cabbages and as their name suggests they hail from Brussels, Belgium. Being a cousin of cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli it too doesn’t have many fans but we are here to change your mind about it and after reading the benefits you too will agree that it is a “Chota packet with bada dhamaka.”

Benefits of Brussel Sprouts 

1. Loaded with Antioxidants

Brussel sprouts are a vault of nutritious and one that is in abundance are antioxidants. They help the body fight off oxidative stress and prevent fatal diseases to creep up. One antioxidant that stands out is Kaempferol because it works on a cellular level to prevent the formation of cancer cells, ease inflammation, and prevent heart diseases, arthritis, and diabetes. Brussel sprouts fight off free radicals just like superheroes fight off bad guys.

Brussel sprouts are known to combat carcinogens and prevent cell damage, it also is an excellent source of increasing the level of detoxifying enzymes, which is important for the prevention of colorectal cancer. 

2. Rich in Fibre 

Fibre is an important nutrient for our good health, especially our gut health. Fibre keeps our stomach and intestines free and is very helpful in constipation, it helps increase bowel movements and soften the stool for easing the passage. If I tell you that Brussel sprouts can form blood clots and stop your body from bleeding out, would you believe me? If you said yes then you are right, it can do that. Well, not directly, you can’t rub some sprouts on your arm and voila! A clot will appear. It does it indirectly by being rich in vitamin K, which is responsible for the formation of blood clots during bleeding. So all in all the answer to the question is still yes.

Vitamin K is also valuable for maintaining a healthy bone structure and reduce the chances of developing conditions like osteoporosis which emerge due to advanced bone loss. 

4. High in ALA Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids are majorly needed by the body to carry out the proper functioning of the heart and the immune system, and its shortage and dangerously hamper our health. Omega-3 reduces the body’s blood triglycerides, slows cerebral decline, decreases insulin resistance and reduces inflammation. Although omega-3 is mostly found in all seafood, it can be an inconvenience for people who don’t eat fish, therefore Brussel sprouts fill the void to some extent. 

Brussel sprouts are rich in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) which is a type of omega-3 fatty acid used less productively by our body than omega-3 from seafood. It is because our body converts ALA into active omega-3 in very little quantity. Luckily, Brussel sprouts contain enough to keep a seafood hating body healthy and long-lasting. 

5. Full of Vitamin C

Vitamin C is an all-rounder vitamin, it repairs tissue damage, is an active antioxidant, produces proteins like collagen which is very important for the skin and it also boosts our immunity to the highest point possible. Also, if you eat Brussel sprouts regularly as a part of a balanced diet your chances of being infected with a cold will decrease. 

Plants produce a type of iron called non-heme iron easier which is hard to absorb than the iron from meat and the vitamin C in Brussel sprouts makes the absorption convenient.
